Food Donation

In 1996, President Clinton signed the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act to encourage donations of food to non-profit organizations for distribution to needy families. This law protects manufacturers, retailers, and wholesalers from liability when donating food to a non-profit organization. Donors are protected from civil and criminal liability if the product donated in good faith later causes harm to a recipient. Donor liability exposure is now standard, and the law sets a liability floor of "gross negligence" or intentional misconduct for those donating grocery products. In addition, Congress has recognized that donating food close to the date of recommended retail sale is not grounds for negligence.

For the complete text of the Food Donation Act, visit Feeding America.

Donating is also good public relations! A Feeding America survey indicates that 80 percent of consumers would buy from companies that support hunger relief.

For food manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, donating to the Second Harvest Food Bank is easier than ever. Simply contact us and we'll arrange to pick up your donation.

Individuals may bring grocery items and garden produce to the warehouse at 6621 N. Old SR 3 Muncie, IN 47303 any weekday between 8 A.M. and 5 P.M. and other times by appointment.

Funds Donation

Second Harvest Food Bank relies on private and foundation support to fund our hunger-relief efforts in East Central Indiana. There are many opportunities to become involved in the life of our network of more than 125 member agencies.

We understand that many individuals are rightfully concerned about how non-profit organizations use contributions.

Become a Volunteer

Volunteers are accepted Monday thru Friday 8a-12p & 1p-5p. We ask that volunteers spend at least 2 hours volunteering. Groups of 8 or more, arranged in advance, are welcome on evenings & weekends. For more information on volunteering as a group contact Joe Fox at jfox@curehunger.org or (765) 287-8698 ext. 106.

Volunteers at Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana are making a difference every day. Through their efforts, Second Harvest Food Bank distributes nearly five million pounds of food for hunger relief in our eight county service area. Second Harvest Food Bank would simply not be able to distribute food to those in need without the help of volunteers. Hundreds of volunteers give thousands of hours each year.

Our warehouse volunteer program is very popular. Volunteers include students, seniors, businesspeople, church members, youth groups, and others, who help us separate, sort, inspect and package food.

Volunteer to help with special events and fund raisers. You can help us with golf outings, food drives, as celebrity servers, selling raffle tickets to name a few. Or, you can design your own special event to benefit our work.

Feel good, enjoy your self, and pick the task best suited to your energy and interests. The rewards you will reap helping to provide food for a hungry neighbor are immeasurable. You will come away with a sense of accomplishment knowing you are helping someone who really needs it.

For all volunteer arrangements, please contact the office at (765)287-8698 ext. 100 or email tjones@curehunger.org.

Ongoing opportunities:

  • Warehouse: Volunteers are needed to help with general upkeep of warehouse, loading & unloading trucks, picking orders, and sorting food.
  • Office Assistance: Volunteers are needed to share their talents while helping with a range of office and administrative tasks. Help is especially needed during the end of the month with monthly newsletters and direct mail pieces.
  • Kids Cafe: Kids Cafe is an after-school feeding program that provides nutritious meals to over 500 children in our area. Currently, there are seven Kids Cafe sites operating in five counties. • Special Events: Dream Ball, Tips for Hunger, Tips for Hungry Lips, Golf Outings, and the National Hunger Awareness Day are just some of the unique events we hold to raise funds, food and awareness. Volunteers have fun while doing things like registration, participation, and/or serving food. These events will be continuously updated on our website.
