SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK RELOCATES

Larger, More Modern Facility Results in Greater Service to Area

Muncie, Indiana --- February 26, 2008 --- Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana is now occupying their new facility.

The new location is the former Feeny Manufacturing complex in Delaware County next to the Water Bowl. There are four buildings on the 36.6 acre site. The buildings total more than 110,000 square feet of space. The site has approximately 24 acres of undeveloped land. Initially the Food Bank is occupying 30,000 square feet in one building of the complex, with expansion as needed into other buildings.

Critical structural damage made the current location in Anderson not only unsuitable for the vital services the organization provides for the area, but also dangerous. An exterior wall in the building built in 1913 was found to be in danger of collapse. The cost of repairing the wall was prohibitive. The decision by Second Harvest to permanently relocate the organization's offices and warehouse was made in October 2005.

The 27 mile move situates the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana centrally in the 8 county area it serves. Moving not only addressed existing needs, but will position the organization to meet the challenge of ending hunger in East Central Indiana.

Space utilization experts have estimated that the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana will require more than 90,000 square feet of space by 2016. The Feeny property will adequately provide that space.

"We moved to a 100% delivery program to all 130 food pantries and meal programs in 8 counties at no charge to them during the crisis." said Lois Rockhill, executive director. "We will continue to provide dependable service in all counties and we will support our Kids Cafe sites. We exist to end hunger in east central Indiana and we will faithfully continue to do so even while facing the new challenges before us."

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana will distribute nearly 4 million pounds of food to people in need this year. This is in line with the long term goal of an 11 million pound annual distribution by 2016, an amount adequate to end hunger for the 49,000 people living in poverty in east central Indiana.

"Second Harvest was very fortunate to purchase this facility for $700,000," said Brad Condon, chief governance officer. "The one building itself would cost twice that to build new. With the central location and expanded facility we are well situated to serve all of our counties for the next ten years."

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation providing a coordinated approach to alleviating hunger in east central Indiana. For 25 years, Second Harvest Food Bank has served the people of the area with fresh produce, packaged food products and other grocery items. Thanks to generous supporters in the region, Second Harvest provides food assistance to 63,900 different people in need in this region each year. The regional organization is a member of America's Second Harvest, the Nation's Food Bank Network.

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana exists to achieve the following goals:

The most vulnerable people in East Central Indiana will be free from hunger.
Communities will demonstrate that they value ending hunger.
All community members will have the knowledge, skills, and resources to be free from hunger.
Public policy will display commitment to ending hunger.

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana was incorporated July 25, 1983 to act as a liaison between the food industry and organizations that feed the ill, needy and children in adequate amounts to allow for a nutritious and balanced diet. Since that time, Second Harvest has grown to distribute nearly 4 million pounds of groceries donated by the food industry to 130 charitable programs in eight counties. Programs include pantries, meals, day care, shelter and other services for the region's 49,000 people living in poverty and the additional 72,000 low-income households struggling to make ends meet.

Second Harvest operates the Kids Cafe program throughout east central Indiana, sponsors the Summer Food Service Program for Children, contracts with the State to distribute commodities through The Emergency Food Assistance Program and conducts tailgate distributions. Second Harvest provides leadership in addressing hunger issues and advocacy.
